Breaking out of the Bubble!

Wednesday 14th November 2018 - Mojacar, Andalucia

Yesterday we left Camposol (the social experiment putting a whole British community in the Spanish countryside).  By the way the same social experiment is taking place all over the east coast of Spain.  Even Daisy and Helen acknowledge that it feels like a social experiment that they are stuck in and they are captured in a bubble they can't escape from.  Well....I revved up the Bavaria's Fiat engine and gave it full throttle to burst our way out of the bubble.  The escape had an unintended consequence because my national identity went berserk.......

Having escaped Little Britain I thought I had become a Viking!  Fortunately the effects were short lived and I reverted to normal....if there is such a thing?

We only drove as far as a small resort called Bolneuvo, near to Puerto de Mazarron.  Whilst we had broken through the bubble, Daisy and Helen only managed to stretch it to Bolneuvo as they joined us for a tapas trail around the bars before the bubble pulled them back to Camposol.

The tapas trail became more like a snail trail....

....as we unknowingly all ordered snails in a tomato sauce for one of our tapas.  Only Helen and Daisy's dog 'Runa' seemed to enjoy eating the snails.

Our site was a pretty good one.  It had probably the best 'asseos' (toilet) block so far on our travels.  I'm thinking of starting a 'Good Asseos' award for sites we visit on the trip!  Overall the site seemed well ordered with many people staying over the whole winter and all nationalities were represented on the site.  It was right next to the beach and close to the small town too.

I couldn't resist catching a picture of a man doing the bin run.  It reminded us of being on our site at Peterborough earlier in the year.  The pitches certainly don't conform to the Caravan Club rules of 6 metre gaps....some people make use of every inch (sorry, centimetre) of their pitch area, with mats, fences, flowers and ornaments.

Here is a picture of an eroded rock formation in Bolneuvo.

Today we moved south to avoid a poor weather forecast.  We have missed out Cartagena but will have to come back and see it on a future visit to Daisy and Helen.

On our journey, Janice and I repeatedly commented about the amount of new road and bridge building that must have taken place along the whole coastal areas of Spain.  It is amazing how much has been done....often to a very high specification....sometimes near fairly small towns that don't seem to warrant such grand roads.  We keep commenting that it must be 'European' money that is funding it.  Surely, a country that has struggled so much economically can't afford all of this investment otherwise. Maybe they have been getting the British EU contributions?  The U.K. doesn't seem to have money for road maintenance at all.

We have eventually stopped at a white hillside town of Mojacar which is our first call into Andalucia.  It claims to be a busy tourist town but it seemed virtually closed with few tourists.  We are wild camping on a fairly large car park in the town centre.  It may be the only flat area in the town.

It certainly has a pretty Spanish appearance that we haven't seen so far.  Plenty of little alleys and steps. It has good country views in one direction and sea views in the other.

  1. Some of the new roads we travelled on had large signs giving a breakdown of costs and funding and yes the large majority of funding was with EU money, something we seemed to have missed out on!
Makes for great cycling roads as most of the time there's hardly any traffic
