Breakthrough in Caravan Site Standards

Thursday 1st November 2018 - El Saler, Valencia.

One thing I forgot to mention about Peniscola was that it was where they filmed the film 'El Cid'.  I initially thought El Cid was a character on the Life of Mars series that was set in the 1970's era of Police but on reflection it is the name of a famous Spanish hero who was born in Burghos in northern Spain.  I will research the story and give a better explanation later in the trip.

This was what we came for.......sunny mornings and no wind so we can sit outside and have our morning coffee in a pleasant temperature.

The sites so far have been ok, reasonably priced and not too busy.  The facilities have been clean, but there has been an absence of toilet roll wherever we have been.  Since our stint with the Caravan and Motorhome Club we are more observant about standards.  We didn't expect wide hardstandings or 6 metre gaps between vans.  Sites seem to be layed out with pollarded trees to mark spaces for vans but they will probably give some shade during the summer when leaves are on the trees.  This last site was so tight with trees it was a miracle that we didn't clip one of the branches or trunks as we drove around.

Today is All Saints Day and it is a public holiday in Spain but at least some of the food shops were open (not that we needed them) and many people were out and about.

We drove through the eastern edge of Valencia to our site that is on the coast about 8km south of the city.  Thank goodness for the sat nav or else I probably wouldn't have coped with the 6 lanes of traffic approaching roundabouts and junctions.

The site seems pretty decent.  We were placed on our pitch by the staff.  There is reasonable space and the toilets are functioning however the major breakthrough is the presence of toilet roll......decent quality too.....tough enough but soft on the delicate areas.  You know what I mean......don't pretend that it isn't important to you too!

We have had a little bike ride up and down the coast to check out the villages and beaches.

This is the nearest beach.   Not exactly busy.  On the opposite side of the campsite is a large lake L'Albufera which is very shallow and is a nature reserve especially for birds.

This is part of the lake with Valencia in the background.

I have been reading about Pablo Picasso and the modern art movement of Spain in the 20th Century....

So I have decided to carry on the movement into the 21st Century, here is my modern art offering.....

That's enough for today, I think.  No it's not a self portrait!
